First Tattersalls Yearling Sale at Big
M Averages $12,000
East Rutherford, NJ -
The first yearling sale to be conducted by Lexington-based
Tattersalls to be held at the Meadowlands Racetrack, held on
Columbus Day in the paddock, grossed $2,245,300 for 187
yearlings sold, with an average of $12,007. The Meadowlands 2003
Columbus Day Yearling Sale featured yearlings eligible to top
state-bred programs in the Northeast, including those in New
Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
"We're extremely pleased," said Tattersalls General Manager
Geoffrey Stein. "The marketplace in New Jersey remains very
strong. Anything of quality sold very, very well. The consignors
were pleased and there was a fantastic turnout of buyers.
"The timing is perfect for this sale," he said. "Considering
this is our first yearling venture here, we'll be even stronger
next year. It's a strong base to build on."
Two yearlings shared the spotlight with the top price of
$65,000. Lindy's Maestro, a Malabar Man colt out of a
half-sister to 2002 divisional champion and recent Kentucky
Filly Futurity victor Pizza Dolce, brought that price from R.
Gary Stetson of Deerfield, Massachusetts. The New
Jersey-eligible colt was consigned by Preferred Equine Inc. as
agent for K R Breeding LLC of Somersville, Connecticut.
Sandscreen, a half-sister to the brilliant Sanabelle Island
[p,1:50.4, $1.6 million] and from the first crop by 2000 Aged
Pacer of the Year Western Ideal, went to Mike Lachance of
Englishtown, New Jersey for the same amount. The New
Jersey-eligible filly was consigned by Winbak Farm of Chesapeake
City, Maryland.
Muscles Yankee daughter Yankee's Bluegenes brought a final bid
of $57,000 from Thomas Pontone of Kearney, New Jersey. The New
Jersey-eligible filly, consigned by Preferred Equine Inc. as
agent for the Lindy Racing Stable of Enfield, CT, is the third
foal from Indigo Girl [2,1:58.2f, $214,021].
Sheza Hot Cookie, a Mr Vic sister to leading sophomore trotter
Mr. Muscleman, was purchased by that gelding's trainer Noel
Daley, acting as agent, for $52,000. Mr. Muscleman has risen to
the top of the three-year-old trotting ranks with four
consecutive wins which include the Kentucky Futurity, Canadian
Trotting Classic and the Transylvania. The yearling filly was
consigned by Preferred Equine Inc., acting as agent for Byron K.
Schunk and Jennifer Schunk of Clare, Michigan.
The strength in the trotting division continued with the $45,000
paid for Premiere Lindy, a Lindy Lane full sister to Giant Missy
[4,1:55.2,'03,$139,874] from the family of World Champion and
sire Sir Taurus. The Pennsylvania-eligible Premiere Lindy,
purchased by Edward Kimmel of Hegins, Pa, was consigned by
Preferred Equine Inc. as agent for Lindy Farms of Enfield, CT.
The next Tattersalls event at the Meadowlands is the annual
January Select Mixed Sale on Monday, January 19, 2004. Entries
are now being accepting for that sale, which last year grossed
nearly $6 million. Information on all of the Tattersalls sales,
including complete hip-by-hip results, is available on-line at
