2003 Tattersalls Select Yearling Sale
-- Session 2 highlights
Lexington, KY - Wednesday's Tattersalls Select Yearling Sale
session, the second of four evening sessions scheduled, saw 133
yearlings sell for a gross of $4,580,500. The sale continues
Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. and concludes on Saturday night with
the Walnut Hall Ltd. Consignment, with the first of those
yearlings slated to sell at 8 p.m. Five yearlings brought
$100,000 or more, with three of them being by New Jersey
trotting standout Self Possessed, who is off to a brilliant
start to his stud career with his first crop just two year olds.
Self Possesion, a New Jersey eligible son of Self Possessed,
topped the session when he was hammered down for $310,000 to
agent Jimmy Takter. Consigned by Peninsula Farm as agent for
Silver Linden Farm of Woodburn, IN, the colt is the first foal
from the Garland Lobell daughter Judy Garland [2, 2:00.4,
$111,703].
Arcalis Hanover, a Pennsylvania eligible Western Hanover colt,
brought $135,000 from Warren Waxman of Dundas, Ontario.
Concertina [p,3,1:55.1f, $814,509] is the granddam of the colt,
who was consigned by Hanover Shoe Farms of Hanover, PA.
Precious Lindy, a Self Possessed filly from the female family of
multiple stakes winners Act of Grace and Prolific Lady, went to
Blue Chip Bloodstock of Wallkill, NY for $105,000. She was
consigned by Preferred Equine as agent for Lindy Farms of
Connecticut.
Lightfoot, another Self Possessed filly, brought a final bid of
$100,000 from Joie De Vie Farm of Jobstown, NJ. The filly,
consigned by Preferred Equine as agent for Moni Maker Breeders
of Briarcliff Manor, NY, is from the female family of Esquire
Spur [3, 1:56f, $550,000], Esprit Spur [2, 1:58f, $316,572],
etc.
Brokaw, a Western Ideal colt, sold for $100,000 to Noel Daley of
Bordentown, NJ. From the female family of stakes winners
Broadcast and Simulcast, the colt was consigned by Brittany
Farms as agent for Pedigree Farm of Campbellville, Ontario.
"There was a lot of enthusiastic bidding tonight," said
Tattersalls General Manager Geoffrey Stein. "When you sell any
horse for $300,000, it adds a real spark. It reinforces my
belief that there's plenty of money around for the right horse.
Tonight's session was a perfect example."
"We were hoping for $175,000 to $200,000 for him," said
Peninsula's Carter Duer of the session topper. "You just never
know until they get in the sales ring. We sold a Muscles Yankee
colt Tuesday for $175,000 that was a very nice colt too. I
thought they'd bring about the same, but there were a couple of
extra bidders on this one - that was the difference.
"We've sold a couple cheaper than I expected, then others like
this one for more than expected," he said. "The ones that bring
$310,000 are not the meat of the business, but they sure make
for a better evening."
